Preso’s Report
After one of the most consistent year’s surf I can recall at Umina, it was disappointing to have to cancel the final point score round due to a lack of swell. Please note that the November comp will not be rescheduled. The cancellation did permit us to put a bit more time into selling the 2012 OBMC Nude Calendar at the Ettalong Beach Oyster Festival, with a total of 45 calendars being sold over the weekend. I am pleased to advise that we have recovered the cost of producing the calendar and all sales from now will be donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia. Please continue to let your family and friends know about it and what a unique Christmas gift it makes.

The Long John Old Mal Day is on December 4 and members are reminded that you are required to surf in fancy dress. Come as whoever or whatever you want, remembering that cash prizes are on offer to the best dressed. Old mals are provided and a draw from the hat determines which board you ride. If you have an original 60’s D-fin board you don’t mind us using, please bring it on the day. Our own “Masterchef” Ken Darby, will again be cooking up a seafood treat! The title of “Long John” was the nickname of John Hirst, a long time member of the club who passed away suddenly on Christmas Eve a few years ago. John stood about 6’4”, hence the nickname. A great bloke with a wicked sense of humour. John, you are still sorely missed! “Party Wave” ....... those who knew and surfed with him will understand.

The 2011 presentation night is to be held at the Umina Beach Surf Club on Saturday, 17th December, commencing at 6pm. Entertainment will be provided by local band “Null and Void”, whom we remember did a great job for us a couple of years ago.

The OBMC general Christmas Raffle tickets are now available and will be distributed to members over the next week or so. First prize is a 9’2” longboard donated by Image Surfboards. Second prize is an 81cm Sonic HD Digital TV and third prize is a Sonic Multimedia Speaker with iPod Dock. Members who sell their whole book of general raffle tickets will be given an extra ticket in the members’ raffle if you purchase three or more. First prize in the members’ raffle is a voucher for a custom surfboard to the value of $750 from Image Surfboards with minor prizes of a leg rope and a deck grip. Tickets are $10 each, 3 for $25 or 8 for $50. We will again be selling the general raffle tickets in the Umina CBD on Saturday 10th and 17th December so if you have a couple of hours to spare on these days, come along and help out.

to Sunday, 5th February due to large junior surf carnival with in excess of 1000 participants.

Extract from Surfing Australia rule book 2010

Snaking

The surfer who is farthest inside at the initial point of take-off and has established wave possession is entitled to that wave for the duration of their ride, even though another surfer may subsequently take off behind them. The judges will not penalize the surfer because they have right-of- way even though they are in front.
If the second surfer has not hindered the original surfer with right-of-way, then the judges may choose not to penalize them and will score both surfers rides.
If in the opinion of the judges, the second surfer has interfered with (snaked) the original surfer with right of way, by causing them to pull out or lose the wave, then interference may be called on the second surfer, even though they are behind the first when the penalty was called.
A surfer may not take off on the other side of a fully broken wave peak to gain possession of the opposite wave face. An interference will be called if the majority of the judges feel that the surfer riding from behind the broken peak has hindered the scoring potential of the surfer who already has established possession / right of way in that direction.
The above situations apply only to multiple surfer heats or One on One in non-priority situations.

Note:
Should a surfer be penalized for a second interference during the same heat, he will immediately be called from the water and no points be scored for that heat.
