Ocean Beach Malibu Club

It’s 7.00am & we are greeted with 3–4 foot closeouts, a dead low tide, rain squalls from the south & predicted easterly winds for the day. It wasn’t looking good for a contest, but having already postponed two, it was necessary to go ahead with it. The decision was made to move down to the caravan park & set up towards the cove, so we at least got some protection from the wind. Not long after setting up, the wind died, the water glassed off, & suddenly things didn’t look so bad. Round one saw most surfers elect to surf the smaller right hand break of the cove, with the alternative being the bigger waves directly in front of the judge’s tent which would occasionally hold up.

The incoming tide saw the swell increase dramatically & the extra water was finally giving some shape to the waves, with the second round being surfed in some solid 6 foot waves. A few of the boys took a pounding, with a couple of injuries, while young Bryce Williams had his board snapped clean in two. He quickly borrowed another to go on & win the heat.
Brett Wakelin was the day’s champ winning both of his heats. Other heat winners included Kai Ellice-Flint, Mark Williams, Garry Halliday, Darrin Fleming, Brian Cook, Craig Coulton & Scott Palmer. Special thanks to Peter Ellice-Flint who judged most of the heats throughout the day.

After the completion of the raffles it was announced that the OBMC would pay the entry fee for members wishing to compete at this year’s “Mal de Mer” contest, to be held at Rainbow Beach, Bonny Hills, on the 15th, 16th & 17th of August, 2008. This is a fantastic contest, very well run, with exceptional raffle prizes to be won. An entry form is included in this newsletter. Congratulations to Calyn Wilkinson & Hayden Emery who both competed for the OBMC at the “Snowy McAllister” contest in Manly over the June long weekend. While Hayden was eliminated in the early rounds, he did have the distinction of beating Nat Young in his heat…. Not a bad effort…
Meanwhile Calyn made it through to the semi finals before being eliminated. Well done guys!!!
