Umina Charcoal
Chicken is now under new management with Matt Anthony taking over from Mark
Sheehan late last year. Matt has agreed to continue the generous sponsorship
that Mark provided us with for several years. Please introduce yourself to Matt
as an OBMC member when purchasing your chooks. For those who are unaware, it
was Umina Charcoal Chicken that provided your dinner at the presentation night
last December and very nice it was too!
Contest Director’s Report - Sunday, 14th February.
What a surprise
the first contest for 2010 turned out to be. With flat conditions the day
prior, almost everyone was expecting the opening contest for the year to be
postponed but instead we were greeted with a lovely little 2-3ft swell, along
with two banks to keep both the goofys and naturals
happy.
Six new surfers
have joined us for the year. We welcome the father and son team of John and Tom
Payne, Bill Ballard, Brent Thoroughgood, Scott Arena
and Cody Fleming.
12 year old Cody
Fleming was the surprise packet of the “newbies”, winning
his first round heat and then coming a credible fourth against all of the round
one winners. What a great boost to our junior division, along with 11 year old
Tom Payne who managed a third in his round one heat and followed that up with a
second placing in the thirds’ heat in round two.
Bill Ballard was
another newcomer to win his round one heat but found the second round a lot
tougher in the battle of the firsts. Bill has been surfing Umina for many years
so it’s good to see him finally join us in competition.
Hayden Emery
scored the maximum points for the day winning both of his heats. Angela Smith
also deserves congratulations for her effort, placing second in both rounds competing
against the men.
First round
winners were Brent Olsson from Bill Burke and Nick Somogyi, Calyn Wilkinson from Craig Coulton and Tom Payne, Cody Fleming from John Payne and Paul Goder,
Garry Halliday from Mitch Bolton and Cyndi Zoranovic, Bill Ballard from Angie Smith and Mark Williams
and Hayden Emery from Brian Cook and Scott Arena.
Round two winners
were (firsts) Hayden Emery from Calyn Wilkinson and
Garry Halliday, (seconds) Brian Cook from Angie Smith
and John Payne, (thirds) Mark Williams from Tom Payne and Scott Arena,
(fourths) Ron Stockings from Chris Irwin and Brent Thoroughgood,
(fifths) Mark Rylands from Craig Palmer and Tony
Irwin and in the final heat of the day (sixths) Mark Shaw was victorious over
Glen Bible and Neville Gough.
The next OBMC
contest is scheduled for Sunday, 14th March.
The 2010 club
t-shirts have been ordered and hopefully will be ready for the next contest on
March 14.
T-shirts will only
be issued to financial members so please remember to bring your completed
membership application and applicable membership fee if you haven’t already
done so. Could those 2009 members who are not renewing their membership please
advise me either by phone or email.
A record number of
interference rulings (drop-ins) were recorded during the course of the February
contest so I have included in this newsletter an extract from the Surfing
Australia 2010 rule book regarding snaking. Please read and understand the
rulings.

Extract from Surfing Australia rule book 2010
Snaking
- The surfer who is farthest inside at the initial point of take-off and has established wave possession is entitled to that wave for the duration of their ride, even though another surfer may subsequently take off behind them. The judges will not penalize the surfer because they have right-of- way even though they are in front.
- If the second surfer has not hindered the original surfer with right-of-way, then the judges may choose not to penalize them and will score both surfers rides.
- If in the opinion of the judges, the second surfer has interfered with (snaked) the original surfer with right of way, by causing them to pull out or lose the wave, then interference may be called on the second surfer, even though they are behind the first when the penalty was called.
- A surfer may not take off on the other side of a fully broken wave peak to gain possession of the opposite wave face. An interference will be called if the majority of the judges feel that the surfer riding from behind the broken peak has hindered the scoring potential of the surfer who already has established possession / right of way in that direction.
- The above situations apply only to multiple surfer heats or One on One in non-priority situations.
Note:
Should a surfer be penalized for a second interference during the same heat, he will immediately be called from the water and no points be scored for that heat. |
