Contest Director’s Report... August 8, 2010.
After the disappointment of having to postpone the July contest due to lack of surf, “Huey” was looking after us once more with a nice 3ft swell, along with the choice of a couple of banks on which to surf and with a 6am high tide, all looked good for competition. Thirty four surfers braved the cold winter morning to compete.
Hayden Emery continued to expand his lead in the club championship, winning the contest of the firsts. The surprise packet of the day was the fast improving Cyndi Zoranovic who outpointed the men to win the thirds. As the season nears an end the battle for the ladies club championship is shaping up to be a beauty between Cyndi & Angie Smith.
Round one saw John Payne take the honours from Chris Irwin and Bill Burke in heat 1, Kai Ellice-Flint from Garry Halliday and Paul Donkin in heat 2, Blake Donkin from Brent Olsson and Cyndi Zoranovic in heat 3, Brett Wakelin from Richie McClelland and Brent Thoroughgood in heat 4, Calyn Wikinson from Matt Sing and Ben Orman in heat 5, while Hayden Emery was successful in the final round one heat from Mark Williams and Mitch Cassidy.
In the second round, Kai Ellice-Flint was the runner up to Hayden, with Blake Donkin taking third spot in the firsts with Mark Williams winning the seconds from Richie McClelland and Matt Sing. Cyndi won the thirds from Ben Orman and Brent Thoroughgood with Bill Ballard taking out the fourths from Craig Coulton and Angie Smith knocking off the males for third position. In the fifths, Brian Cook was the winner over Phil Bruce and Darrell Young while the last heat of the day was won by young Kayd Donkin with Paul Goder and Tony Irwin taking out the minor places.
The next OBMC contest is the postponed July competition, to be held at Umina Beach on Sunday, 29th August.
Congratulations to both Kai Ellice-Flint and Bryce Williams who finished third and fifth respectively at the State Titles at Coffs Harbour in June and this week take on the best in the country at the Australian Longboard Titles at Port Macquarie. Considering both surfers are only fourteen years old and are competing against under 18’s, what a fantastic achievement and we wish both the very best of luck.
As most of you would know by now, the 21st Mal de Mer Longriders contest at Bonny Hills had to be cancelled due to the Aussie Titles having a blanket ban on all beaches from Port to North Haven, although a friendly contest and BBQ is still going ahead on the Saturday for those still going up. The location will be announced early on the Saturday morning at Bonny. The OB open golf day (putt putt) will most likely be on the Friday afternoon. Due to the number of dropouts, we won’t worry about fancy dress this year but I do remind you all that the Long John Old Mal on December 5 is fancy dress. The 2010 presentation night is set down for Saturday, December 18 at the Umina Surf Club so record that date on your calendars too!!!
My records indicate that all current financial members have received their 2010 club t-shirt which leaves us with 1 only XXXL, 3 only XXL, 3 only XL and 4 only L shirts left, which can be purchased for $20 each. See Craig C.
Members are reminded that free surfing in the competition area is not permitted and competition points can be deducted if need be. Please choose a break away from the comp area. Taking off on a wave & standing up with your competition vest on before or after your heat is also not permitted as it makes it extremely hard for the judges to determine just who is in what heat.
Once again many judges are giving very low scores. Please refer to the criteria at the bottom of each judging sheet. If a surfer takes off and does even a basic controlled bottom turn then that wave should score a minimum 2.1 with each further manoeuvre adding points as they are completed. Under 2.0 is only for when there is no manoeuvre or a minor manoeuvre with little or no control.

Snaking
- The surfer who is farthest inside at the initial point of take-off and has established wave possession is entitled to that wave for the duration of their ride, even though another surfer may subsequently take off behind them. The judges will not penalize the surfer because they have right-of- way even though they are in front.
- If the second surfer has not hindered the original surfer with right-of-way, then the judges may choose not to penalize them and will score both surfers rides.
- If in the opinion of the judges, the second surfer has interfered with (snaked) the original surfer with right of way, by causing them to pull out or lose the wave, then interference may be called on the second surfer, even though they are behind the first when the penalty was called.
- A surfer may not take off on the other side of a fully broken wave peak to gain possession of the opposite wave face. An interference will be called if the majority of the judges feel that the surfer riding from behind the broken peak has hindered the scoring potential of the surfer who already has established possession / right of way in that direction.
- The above situations apply only to multiple surfer heats or One on One in non-priority situations.
Note:
Should a surfer be penalized for a second interference during the same heat, he will immediately be called from the water and no points be scored for that heat. |
