Ocean Beach Malibu Club Inc. - History
The original Ocean Beach Surfing Association was established in 1962, after a meeting conducted in Stan Green's garage, located in Augusta St , Umina, whereby Kerry Purdon was voted in as the club's first president. Some of those present include Harry Wall, Dennis Knock, John Young and the Monie brothers, Bill and John.
With the onset of the Vietnam War seeing some members drafted, others joining the larger Central Coast club, and a few joining Sydney based clubs, the Ocean Beach Surfing Association disbanded at the end of the 1966 season.
The late 1980's saw a resurgence of surfers riding malibus , so the Umina Boardriders would often conduct a longboard heat after the completion of their contest. The continued growth in the number of longboarders resulted in the establishment of the Ocean Beach Malibu Club in 1991.
From 1997, club membership increased rapidly. This increase in membership created the need for graded seniors, as well as establishing a junior grade (grommets). With a duty of care to the juniors, the largest membership ever, and the need to have the committee accountable, the incorporation of the club and affiliation with Surfing NSW was effected in 2002.
In 2003, the club's first life memberships were awarded to Derek Overton, Harry Wall and Garry Halliday. Dave Wakelin, Ron Flight, Gary Marshall, Brian Cook, Bill Burke & Craig Coulton have since been added to that list.
In recognition of the support we receive from the Umina Beach Surf Life Saving Club , the Ocean Beach Malibu Club Inc adopted their club colours of blue, black and white in 2004.
Each September sees an interclub challenge against Shelly Beach Malibu Club, which commenced in the mid 90's and has now become a charity fund raising event. Each year the hosting club nominates a charity to which the proceeds of the day are donated to.
With several father/son and father/daughter combinations in our club, we recognize longboarding as a family sport and encourage every generation to participate.
